Non-NHS/Private Services

Patients often ask doctors to write letters, complete and sign medical forms or supply medical information to third parties. This work is not covered by the NHS contract and is classed as Private work. This is completed in the doctor's own time and can therefore take a number of days or weeks to be completed. Doctors are entitled to charge for providing this service.

A fee may be charged for the following services:-

  • Medicals for insurance
  • Sports medicals
  • HGV/PSV examinations
  • Employment medicals
  • Filling in various forms
  • Some travel immunisations
  • Travel-related requests for information
  • Other non-NHS services such as letter requests

This list is not exhaustive.

More information on why GPs sometimes charge fees is available on the British Medical Association (BMA) website:

Travel Vaccinations

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.
